I Hear You in the Trees is a lens-based examination into the intangibility of temporal relationships as a means to heal from grief and trauma. The series was created in response to my time at the Banff Artist in Residency Early Career Program in early 2024 and reflects my attempts to heal from the loss of my mother in 2018.

I contemplated the journey that I made from Winnipeg to Banff, and then from the Banff Centre to various locations found in the images. From the death of my mother to the life I lead now, it is a path that moves forward, further away from tragedy and trauma, to place of balance, healing, and creation.

Each night, usually between 11pm and 3am, I would walk into the woods surrounding the Banff Centre, slowly making my way down in the townsite and back again.

I photo-documented the surreal nature of Banff, a major global tourism destination, at night in the dead of winter. The lack of people brought a striking strangeness to a place normally brimming with people. In the stark silence, somewhere in the trees, I could hear my mother’s voice.

Timothy Brown is an interdisciplinary artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, who’s practice focuses on the intangibility of temporal relationships as means to confront, and heal from, grief and trauma.
