Over 11,000 kilometres from Winnipeg lies Macau, a place that oftentimes feels much farther since moving away — a place from another life. Yet last fall, I returned to the city I grew up in, walking its streets where the past and present blurred together.

Located along the south coast of China, Macau was ruled by the Portuguese for over 450 years and developed as a uniquely Eurasian city. Its architectural heritage, distinct Macanese people, and a mosaic of Chinese and Portuguese influences have shaped a culture where east and west continually intersect.

The images linger on everyday scenes— art deco balconies, faces half-seen in passing, and old cobblestone streets. So distant until it’s not reflects on the experience of returning to the place where space, time, and memory compress, where the vividness of memory confront the obscurity of the present.
