The human eye transforms light into images through a chemical process; photography operates in a similar way. While the mechanics of the eye are fairly constant, the art of photography offers endless possibilities for experimentation with light. Poetics of Light: Experiments in Photography will showcase the work of artists who have pushed the boundaries of photography and have pursued experimentation within their practice.
This exhibition will highlight the experiments of photographers who are ethnic minorities, 2SLGBTQ+, and disabled, each viewing the world through the unique lens of their lived experiences. Their experimental approaches to photography not only challenge traditional ideas of the medium, but also allow for a reframing of personal narratives.
By playing with light, shadow, materials, and techniques, these artists create works that embody their perspectives and identities. Through their experimental approaches to photography, they each challenge normative ideas of the medium, offering new ways to see both their stories and the art form itself
