In the three weeks I spent in the Antarctic last fall, I captured over 10,000 images of mountains and ice and animals and rust… Although the editing process was ongoing, it wasn’t until I returned home that I fully realized what I had experienced. The luminosity of this mountainous environment is extraordinary – light behaves differently there. Colours are more intense than you can imagine and yet the natural environment appears to be monochromatic.
The juxtaposition of the monochromatic natural environment and the man-made, often abandoned, intrusions into that environment also create very powerful imagery. The Antarctic is dripping in rust and the way that it intrudes on the mountainous landscape is beautiful and terrifying.
Many thanks to the Banff Mountain Film Festival who’s Photography Residency in September 2017 allowed me the opportunity to develop the concept for this show, which will run at Nott until December 23, 2017.
Opening Reception – October 18th at 7pm, wine and cheese!
