In conjunction with the Flash Photographic Festival, we present an intimate portrait of an uncompromising artist, Swiss born photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank. Laura Israel, long-time editor of Frank’s films, has created a riveting portrait of the brilliant photographer and underground filmmaker who rose to prominence with his book The Americans – a series of haunting portraits of racism and poverty in America in 1958. Frank is the recipient of many major awards for his photography. Packed with interviews and footage from his rarely seen films including his 1959 beat classic Pull My Daisy and his banned film on the Rolling Stones. The soundtrack includes Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, White Stripes, Yo La Tengo, Tom Waits, and more.

“Critic’s Pick! A vigorous documentary surveying the career and life of the photographer/film-maker/one-man Beat happening. Israel’s willingness to honor Frank’s own vision powers the film (beginning with) a scintillating early montage..Photographs from The Americans, the On The Road of photography books…still thrill, blunt and revelatory almost sixty years later. Supplemented with beautiful reminiscences about the Beats, Bleecker Street, and winters in Nova Scotia.”
